Mark and I used to play Boggle for hours - days, actually - and we often squabbled about when you may consider a word a word. I felt that you needed to have some idea of the definition of a word before you could write it down ("Gentleman's Boggle"), and he thought you could write down things that "looked like words" and look them up later and get credit if they were.

This morning, P. and I were talking about Mitchell and Webb, and he mentioned that Britain has a lot of comedy duos. I said that we used to, and cited "Elaine May and that other person." He said that it doesn't count if I don't know the name.
So in instance 1 we have form but no meaning, and in instance 2, meaning but no form. The question, then, becomes: would Saussure rather have played Boggle with Mark or discussed comedy with me?

That's correct. And if I'm not mistaken, the Boggle rule book works mainly by excluding types of words that may not be used.
Ergo: snop counts.

Ha! An ex-boyfriend used to say there was no such thing as a 5'11" man. He was 6'2", which I internalized as average, (we'd been living together for 2 years) and this wreaked havoc on my ability to describe people for months after we'd broken up.
i am willing to comment but am not willing to put forth the brain energy to ponder saussure. is that horrible? plus i'm not much a boggle-ist. i only understand scrabble references. i am open to this changing. but what i really want to know - if it is fair to reference pass posts in a comment on a new post - is whence this 'down South' approval (as mentioned yesterday)? i don't think of you, for instance, as 'South,' dear l&i. and thus i am baffled.

I have a friend who emailed me recently to tell me that she liked you (though you've never met her), and she likes Mark (I don't think think they've met, either), and that she enjoyed your interactions.
This friend, by the way, just finished her dissertation while working full-time and raising a baby. Amazing, eh?

You know, my word verifications would work better if flippin' blogger would accept them the first time. It destroyed them four times in Firefox, and now that I switch to Safari, it gives me "crabs"? Fie.
Is it terrible to say that I'm impressed that you know html tags? It is, isn't it?
Also, what does it mean to "claim" something? To assert as true? But you'd never speak of yourself as claiming something (in that way).

what I meant was that there appears to be an explicitly pragmatic way that "claim" is used, which should it be part of the definition? other words that have this dimension?
If it makes you feel better, one of the times my comment got rejected was because my tags were mismatched.
