semiotics for sillies

Over the weekend, P. and I were looking at a chummy, "hand-drawn" map of Portland, ringed with ads. One featured a cartoon drawing of a fish, with a thought bubble reading "One free lobster, just for visiting!" I wish that were my shop, so when people came in, I could be like "What? No - that's just what the fish is thinking."

For the record, I thought this was humorous but couldn't think of an appropriate response even though the record shows that my definition of what makes an appropriate response is pretty liberal.

But I will say that if Breccan owned the restaurant, not only would he do the 'that's just what the fish was thinking' thing, but none of the egg sandwhiches would have egg on them and even if they did they would never be served in the first place

"Breccan's" would be a good restaurant.

The fish thing reminded me of when we watched "Blue" (I think), and when the guy came out to his mailbox to get the paper and it announced the disaster, we thought it would be funny if it had announced a Big Sale where he could buy some more silky scarves.
